Are Dental Implants Safe and are There Any Side Effects?

If you are considering dental implants, you likely have some questions regarding safety and side effects. Educate yourself on safety issues and the possible side effects to determine if this procedure is the right choice for you.

Safety and dental implants

Many people are concerned to put foreign objects in their bodies. That is why they worry about the safety of implants. However, the body accepts titanium implants through the process of osseointegration.

What is osseointegration?

Osseointegration occurs when parts of the body grow around an artificial implant. In the case of implants, the bone and the titanium fuse together and create a foundation for the implant. Those who have safety concerns should understand that when the body accepts a foreign object such as an implant, the chance for a successful procedure is high.

Temporary side effects of implants

Those who get implants might experience some temporary side effects. The side effects go away as the surgery site heals.

Minor bleeding

Minor bleeding is a normal side effect of implants. The bleeding typically goes away in 24-72 hours. Dentists place gauze sponges on the site. Patients should bite down on the sponges for the first hour to help the blood clot.

People can also use a salt water rinse to help with the bleeding. Add a tablespoon of salt to 8 ounces of water. Swish it around the mouth as gently as possible and then spit it out. Do not use force as that could cause additional bleeding.

Swelling

Swelling might last for 24 hours after receiving dental implants. This occurs around the incision site and can be reduced by applying ice.

Bruising

Bruising is also common after implant surgery. Both external and internal bruising can occur. Over-the-counter medications reduce the discomfort experienced from bruising.

Serious side effects

Although it is rare, some people experience serious side effects after implant surgery. Serious complications included infections, sinus problems and nerve damage. Those who experience serious side effects should go to the dentist immediately.

Limiting side effects

Patients have some control over the side effects they experience. It is possible to help the healing process go smoothly by changing some habits.

Stop smoking

Smoking makes it harder to heal after any procedure, including implant surgery. Those who smoke should stop prior to getting the surgery.

Eat the right foods

The mouth is sore after implant surgery. Soft and liquid foods such as applesauce and broth-based soups are ideal. People can also eat yogurt and mashed potatoes. It is important to get enough vitamins and protein in after surgery, so read labels to ensure a balanced diet.

Are dental implants the right choice?

Dental implant surgery is a viable option for those who need to replace missing teeth. The osseointegration process implants the titanium rod firmly in place, creating a root for the new tooth. While there are some minor side effects, these issues are usually at a minimum. Get an examination to find out if you are a good fit for implants.
