A General Dentist Shares the Top 5 Causes of Dry Mouth

Every skilled general dentist understands how important it is to prevent dry mouth from developing, and they work to educate patients on the most common causes of dry mouth to help them avoid it. When the cause of dry mouth can be determined, it becomes much easier to treat and prevent it moving forward.

Dry mouth causes

There are several reasons someone may experience dry mouth, and it is up to each and every patient and their general dentist to get to the root of the issue. Although there may be more causes to consider, the following are five of the more prominent reasons one may experience dry mouth.

Dehydration

Patients can experience dry mouth and develop oral health issues that require treatment from a general dentist simply because they are dehydrated. Most commonly, dry mouth caused by dehydration occurs because the individual is under the weather in some manner. Fever, vomiting and blood loss are several reasons one may become dehydrated and suffer from dry mouth. It is important for patients to be mindful that dry mouth is a greater risk when they are sick.

Medication

Another common reason someone may experience dry mouth is because of a medication they are taking. There are certain medications that have dry mouth as a common side effect, and it is important for anyone who suffers from dry mouth to consider any new medications they are taking. In particular, cold, pain, anxiety and depression medications are believed to increase the chance of dry mouth.

Health condition

There are certain health conditions that may put the patient at a higher risk of suffering from dry mouth. Diabetes and a stroke are known to lead to dry mouth. Additionally, patients with autoimmune issues such as HIV/AIDS may be at an increased risk as well. In many instances, dry mouth that mostly occurs at night may be caused by a sleep issue, such as sleep apnea or snoring.

Tobacco products

Tobacco products are also believed by many general dentists to increase the risk of developing dry mouth. It is important for anyone who uses tobacco in any manner should be aware of the effects it has on their teeth, and take extra precaution to ensure that dry mouth and other oral health concerns are avoided. In addition to smoking, alcohol can increase the chance of developing dry mouth, which can ultimately increase the chance of enamel erosion and halitosis.

Nerve damage

One of the lesser known causes of dry mouth is nerve damage, which can be the result of a physical injury or surgical procedure. In particular, nerve damage that occurs around the head or neck can increase the chance of dry mouth and lead to oral health concerns, and it is important to visit a general dentist if dry mouth as the result of nerve damage is believed to be the issue.
